BREATHE WITH JOY

One inhale changes the room
One exhale changes the world

Guided breathwork sessions to uplift mind, body and soul.

Breathe With Joy teaches nervous system regulation and optimization using the Elemental Rhythm breathwork modality alongside a trained facilitator.

How can we be our best when feeling compressed, stressed or depressed?
Carrying the burden isn’t easy. I invite you to take a moment for yourself before continuing.

Do you feel anxiety? Are you reacting? Do you feel stressed? How does your body feel? Do you feel a racing heart, a pain in the chest, or a shortness of breath?

Take a moment and focus on your breath. Bring your attention inward to your body. Breathe slowly into your belly, hold on top and breathe out letting the air flow through your heart for some seconds. Let go of any tension. Focus on feeling a sense of ease. Connect to your body. Notice your breath.

Breathe. Slow down. Relish the now. The future isn’t guaranteed.

Just be.

What is Breathwork?

You have just practiced breathwork. Breathwork is the intentional use of specific breathing patterns to influence physiology, emotions, mental states, and consciousness. The deliberate use of your breath shifts your body's state, influences physical well-being, and is one of the most direct ways to regulate the autonomic nervous system.

At Breathe With Joy, we use intentional breathing to harmonize your body’s internal state and return it to homeostatic balance. You’ve been carrying this timeless tool forever. I can teach you how to maximize your breath’s potential, and how to adapt your breath to any situation.

I help you reimagine your breath for optimal outcomes.

Some people come in skeptical and leave wondering why nobody taught them this sooner.

Why is Breath Vital?

Breathing is a vital rhythmic motor behavior with broad influence on the body and brain. Breathing appears simple, yet belies a complex neural control system. Breath has a direct connection to the vagus nerve and is essential to wellbeing.

Despite a highly developed nervous system, we’re still animals in vulnerable, responsive bodies. When we feel threatened by our habitat, our body manifests a visible response. A hyper active nervous system reacts with shallow breathing, clenched jaws, sleepless nights, which can lead to chronic illness in the long term.

We must learn the language of our nervous system. We have to know the difference between urgency and anxiety, numbing and deep rest. By practicing in a safe space, we can allow our breath to guide us, and control it in situations when breath regulation is necessary.

Breathing rhythm and pattern influence our emotions. Thus, by learning to inhabit ourselves with patience and compassion, we can reimagine the world. In this novel, reimagined world, we find breath is the bridge that connects life to consciousness, uniting your body to your thoughts.

Why Do We Practice Breathwork?

The expression “may you live in interesting times” has never been truer. Almost everyone feels the rapid and dramatic time of change we’re living in. Breathwork offers an accessible, non-invasive, substance free and safe way to respond to our changing world, by exploring our mental state, as well as our spiritual state. We adapt to the outer world, by nourishing our inner world.

Potential Mental Health Benefits

A breathwork practice may improve our mental health and ease psychological distress. Burnout, stress, anxiety, PTSD, and depression, are at all-time highs around the world. As pharmaceutical treatments fall out of favor, scientific research on breathwork has exploded over recent years.

In 2023, researchers found breathwork demonstrates a positive effect on stress and mental health. In particular, diaphragmatic breathing has a positive effect on stress and cortisol levels. In turn, it comes as no surprise that breathing-control lowers blood pressure. The potential of breathwork reaches further.

A breathwork practice may even quell symptoms of depression. Researchers have found that a breathing-based meditation helps people with major depressive disorder, after an inadequate antidepressant response.

The increasing amount of scientific research in recent years points to promising benefits of breathwork for a wide variety of mental health applications. However, the possible advantages of breathwork don’t end there. Breathwork may also open the door to the soul.

Altered States & Consciousness Exploration

Adding a spiritual practice to our lives can be an effective way to address the chaos unfolding in the world around us today. You don’t have to run off to a darkness retreat, go on sabbatical in India to become a guru, or join the latest and trendiest plant medicine retreat. You just have to relearn that breath is sacred. We knew this thousands of years ago.

Ancient spiritual traditions around the world understood the wisdom of breath. Buddhist wisdom placed breath at the center of contemplative life. Indian traditions believed that breath carries prana, the vital life force nourishing the entire universe. In China, qigong evolved from older breath practices that used coordinated breath, posture, and intention to regulate qi (the vital energy that underlies health and longevity). Pneuma, a word found in Greek philosophy and medicine, means "breath" or "wind," and metaphorically to "spirit" or "soul" a “breath of life” that organizes both the body and the cosmos.

Today science seems to be catching up with what ancient spirituality already knew. Modern science suggests a simple breathwork practice can connect us with spirit, and may provoke experiences akin to psychedelics.

For example, decreased CO2 saturation during circular breathwork supports emergence of altered states of consciousness. A bit of breathwork practice may go a long way. Researchers have taken notice and conducted an exploratory study of breathwork-induced altered states of consciousness in experienced practitioners.

As neuroscience makes leaps and bounds, scientists are now looking at the neurobiological substrates of altered states of consciousness induced by high ventilation breathwork accompanied by music. Breathwork practices using increased breathing rate or depth, facilitated by music,

“can evoke subjective experiential states analogous to altered states of consciousness (ASCs) evoked by psychedelic substances. These states include components such as euphoria, bliss, and perceptual differences.”

Although the underlying neurobiological mechanisms of the profound subjective effects of high ventilation breathwork are still unknown, we do know that music plays a significant, complementary role.
